Here’s a side note before we dig in: I actually prefer not to snack, since I feel better when I don’t, both energy-wise and digestively. Click here to read more about that. I try to make my meals satisfying enough to last me until my next meal (about 4-5 hours), without needing to snack. However, sometimes life happens and I just can’t get to my next meal on time, so a snack is necessary. And, I do on occasion snack on something small before my Zumba class or other workout.

Bottom line: it’s always a good idea to have a snack on hand, just in case.

Enter my 5 favourite healthy (and delicious) snacks:

  1. Trail MixThrow together some nuts and seeds (ex: almonds, walnuts, toasted pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds) with raisins or dark chocolate chips. Keep these in your purse or bag at all times… this is my go-to snack on the run.
  2. Apple with Almond ButterChop up an apple, put a couple spoonfuls of almond butter in a dish, mix in a spoonful of coconut oil (getting a variety of good fats!), and dip ‘er in. Yummm… perfect blend of nutty and sweet.
  3. Boiled EggWhenever I boil an egg or two for a salad, I like to boil an extra two to keep in the fridge. As a snack (or even part of a meal), I’ll put the egg in one hand, and a container of Herbamare (or sea salt) in the other. I’ll sprinkle a bit before I take each bite, and it gives me a great salty flavour while providing extra minerals (from the Herbamare/sea salt). Double yum!
  4. Raw CheeseSlice up about three pieces and eat ’em up. Raw (unpasteurized) cheese is typically easier to digest than pasteurized, and during the fermentation process, the lactose is converted to lactic acid, which is beneficial for our gut. And oh my is it delicious. My two favourites are L’Ancêtre medium cheddar and La Chaudière gouda.
  5. Veggies with DipRemember those veggies that you prepped before your week began? (If not, click here.) Maybe you have some celery, carrots, and cucumber washed and chopped and already in the fridge, just waiting for you. Take out a handful or two and dip them in hummus, bean dip, or homemade veggie dip (recipe coming soon).

Bonus Fave Snack!

Beanitos with Guacamole and/or Salsa

When talking about my fave snacks, I can’t not give you this one. This one is a bit more snack-y, if you will, and is great for when people are over or simply when you’re feeling like something extra fun. Beanitos are tortilla chips made from beans and they’re one of my faves.
