If you’ve read some of my other blog posts or watched my videos, then you’ve likely heard about my 80/20 rule, which is less of a rule and more of a general guideline. The basis is that 80% of the time, I focus on eating the healthiest foods possible… and the other 20%, I eat cupcakes.
Haha, just kidding.
I don’t ONLY eat cupcakes during this time; there’s other stuff, too. 🙂
Here’s a caveat:
During my 20%, if I have the choice of eating the healthier option (ex: potato chips made with coconut oil and sea salt vs. ones with a long list of weird ingredients), then I’m absolutely going to choose that healthier option. But, I also choose not to stress about it too much because I don’t think that’s the healthiest way to live, either. Having a constant underlying feeling of guilt or shame when we decide to indulge is detrimental to our mental and emotional health… so let’s not. Plain and simple. Decide today to wipe away any negative associations or thoughts you’ve carried with you when you indulge; it doesn’t serve you or anyone else.
Okay, that was a long caveat.
You see, I’m all about living in the real world and knowing that world includes treats and temptations around every corner. And to expect you (or myself, for that matter), to always say “no, thanks” and to only ever consume the healthiest of healthy foods for the rest of time… well, that’s just not realistic or sustainable for most of us. So live your life and feel empowered knowing that YOU are in control of your health and have the freedom to decide what to put in your body, with NO guilt at any time.
In order to do this in the best way, we must make sure our 80% is rockin’.
What does that mean?
Truly make your 80% count. Super-nourish your body with awesome, delicious, nutrient-filled foods on a daily basis. For me, this includes lots of veggies and some fruit (organic for the Dirty Dozen), naturally-raised meat and eggs, fish, healthy fats and oils like butter, flax oil, olive oil and coconut oil, nuts and seeds, and mineral-rich sea salt plus lots of spices and herbs. And I also drink water on the daily and take supplements based on my body and its needs in order to add even more key nutrients.
When we super-nourish our body in this way, most of us can afford to let loose and indulge here and there. Guilt-free.
And yeah, my 20% absolutely includes the odd cupcake.
So go to it, and tell me, what’s in YOUR 20%? Tell me below in the comments.
