I’ve talked about getting your mind right before starting a healthy eating plan, which is definitely oh-so-important. But from a practical standpoint, what I’m talkin’ about here is the first step to take.
And here it is.
Before you go all crazy shopping for healthy foods, filling your fridge and pantry, and cookin’ up a storm (and believe me, I am super excited for you to do ALL of those things), you gotta address the elephant in the room (well, the house)… your kitchen.
I know! You’re probably thinking ugghhh puh-LEASE don’t make me. And I get it, believe me.
But if you wanna make your healthy eating plan easier, less stressful, and more seamless (all of which make it more DOABLE), then you’ve gotta get that kitchen in tip-top shape.
You will be way more likely to stick to your awesome new lifestyle, AND you’ll be way more likely to find it enjoyable.
Because who wants to search for 15 minutes to gather the ingredients needed to make that killer salad they saw a recipe for? Not me! Who wants to open their pantry while squinting their eyes because they don’t want to face the mess they know they’ll find? Definitely not me. And who the EFF wants to just feel like giving up because they can’t find what they were looking for, so just, what’s the point? No thank you.
I am all about making things easy for myself. I mean, why shouldn’t we be? So believe me when I say that there is a night and day difference in my motivation to choose healthy and super-nourish my body when my kitchen is primed and ready, vs. when it is an absolute mess.
This is just one of those things that you must make time for because it pays off huge, time and time again.
The How-To
Okay, so now that we know why it’s so dang important, let’s talk about how to make it happen. My goal is to make you a prepping ninja!
#1
It’s time to clear out and categorize, baby. Your first task is to go through your fridge and pantry and separate the items into categories. Think condiments, veggies, fruits, canned fish, crackers, snacks… you get the drift. You may need to use your counter or kitchen table to spread everything out on (in fact, I recommend it!).
#2
Go through the items and decide if there’s anything you’d like to (or need to) get rid of. We’re talking foods that don’t serve you or your health. You know, the ones that taste good in the moment but actually make you feel like crap? Yeah, those ones. This is also the time to get rid of any leftovers that have gone bad (we all have them) or items that are expired.
#3
Wipe down the fridge and pantry shelves if need be (there’s no time like the present!) and then put everything back in, keeping the categories together that you’ve created.
#4
Stare at the beauty that is now your organized kitchen, and be proud of the work you just did to get there. As I said, you will thank yourself a million times over!
So, my friend, even though this may seem like a daunting task at the beginning, most people get into the swing of it once they get started, and it can actually start to seem — *gasp* — enjoyable!
And honestly? When your kitchen is organized and ready for anything, you’ll find it so much easier to stick to your healthy eating plan. That’s why this is one of the first things I recommend doing when you’re looking to upgrade to a healthier lifestyle. You will not regret it (ever), so get to it, girl!
Have you done this in YOUR kitchen, and did you find that it helped you feel more motivated to choose healthy? (if that was your goal in the first place)
