When it comes to healthy eating, what is your why? You know, the reason you choose certain foods over others, why you cook the meals you do, and the explanation for your grocery cart containing the food it does.
You might be thinking “well, because of the taste… I enjoy eating foods that taste good.” And yes, taste is a super important part of the equation, but in order to truly get the most out of your food, it has to go deeper.
For me, it actually boils down to the what, as in, what I hope the food will do for me.
I want food to make me feel good, and good to me means lots of energy, easy digestion, and clear headedness, among other feel-good things.
I want to wake up in the morning with energy and excitement rather than aches and pains, fatigue or a crappy mood. Who wants to live with a grump? Not me, nor do I want to be the grumpy one in the house because, that ain’t fun.
I don’t want to have to rely on medications in order to feel good; I want food to do that. (Plus taking care of myself in other ways, too, like getting proper sleep, resting enough, moving my body and doing things that make me happy and calm. But today we’re talkin’ food, baby.)
When you know your why, or more often, whys plural, it’s easier to choose healthy foods over crappy ones. Knowing your whys helps to keep you on track and focused on the healthy routine that you’ve established for yourself (and it helps you create that routine in the first place). It makes it less about the food itself and more about how that food will make you feel, and ultimately, how you WANT it to make you feel.
Because you have that choice, my friend. If you want to feel energized, focused and happy, as I do, then you better choose those healthy foods instead of the junk. This doesn’t mean that you need to go full out 100% (but kudos to you if you do), but it does mean that you should go for the better option around 80% of the time. And the more you do that, the way freakin’ better you will feel.
